What is Adult ADD?

Many people are surprised to learn that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)* is not just a disorder of childhood. That's why people often refer to the adult form of the disorder as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD),* because symptoms of hyperactivity tend to diminish with age.

It is estimated that more than 8 million adults may have Adult ADD, and many don't realize it. These symptoms may interfere with success at work, at home, or with friends.

Research indicates that up to 60% of children with ADHD carry their symptoms into adulthood. It is also believed that ADHD is a genetic disorder. Approximately 35% of parents of children with ADHD have the disorder themselves.

*ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the term used in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria. ADD (Attention-Deficit Disorder) with or without hyperactivity is the older term from the DSM-IIIR.
